Run "dpkg -S /usr/share/xsessions/gnome.desktop" and it will give you:
gnome-session: /usr/share/xsessions/gnome.desktop
which means that file is part of the "gnome-session" package.
Re-install it (using "Synaptic", "dselect", "apt-get", or any other
method) and you'll get a new copy of that file.
(If you already knew about that and you didn't want to re-download that
package (for example because you have a slow connection), then I'm sorry
for my ignorance and just ignore this message!)
