help in setting JAVA_HOME enviorment

i want to install apache cocoon.
but to do that it is neccesary to compile it.
problem is it wants me to set the JAVA_HOME enviorment.
the install doc told me to do this.
JAVA_HOME=/path/to/java

and since i installed java in /sr/java i did this.
JAVA_HOME=/usr/java

but it still does not work.
