Yes, Ubuntu "Warty" installs just fine, using the procedures as you've
described them and in the oldworldinstall page on the wiki
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/InstallOnOldWorldMacs (though as you
suggested I'm using BootX instead of miboot).
HOWEVER, for some reason Hoary will not install directly. The
installer gets partway along and then claims it cannot see the
packages on the CD anymore.
I was able to install Warty and do a dist-upgrade to Hoary ... and
that's working fine. (Though I'm having to re-discover the little
tweaks I had under Debian. Things like adjusting the power settings
and getting the keyboard mouse buttons working reasonably -- F11 & F12
just won't cut it!)
I haven't had any trouble running KDE or GNOME, though maybe they're
not snappy enough for some folks. Mine is a 266 Mhz machine with 300+
Mb RAM. It makes my 200Mhz Pentium look like it's standing still!
Anyway, I was concerned about the Hoary installer not working -- I
wanted to find out if there's a trick to making it work, or if
oldworlds will be left out from now on!
