OK, before I install, a couple of newb questions?

That was me ! :-) Welcome to Ubuntu, I am glad I helped, albeit
un-intentionally, in guiding towards the truth of computing ;o)
When using other distro people could say "the truth is out there
somewhere", without knowing where exactly it was. But now that you have
come to Ubuntu, you will soon feel deep down that the truth is not "out
there" anymore, it's actually right HERE ! :o))
Sorry can't help, I started with Ubuntu 9 months ago, as soon as it was
released, but my enthusiasm, far from diminishing over the month, does
actually grow a bit more every day. Ahhh, Ubuntu... Hold on, give me a
pen and piece of paper, I feel like writing an Ubuntu poem ! :o)
