Getting grip and lame to work

hi

I have installed lame using the synaptic package manager, but it is
still not working.

when I run

whereis lame in the terminal window I just get

Lame:

so i am thinking that lame isnt there....

anyone point me in the right direction pleas...I am very new to this
ubunutu linux business and am trying to get my ipod to work. I got
gtkpod installed and seems to be working, I just need to ba able to
create mp3's off CD's now
