ok I was FINALLY able to set up Samsung ML-1740, locally (USB and LPT1)
and to a Windows network (SMB) computer

you have to do this

1) bash /media/cdrom/setup.sh (chose a directory if you want the expert
installation)

I installed it at /home/programs/Samsung_ML1740 (since Home is in a
different HD in case I need to reinstall Linux, with Ubuntu, it's not
an option)

2) Then, type 'linux-config' from a terminal (or the run menu). In KDE
I don't know were the icons went, but in GNOME it's under "Other".

3) Then you can add a printer, and that's about it

MAIN PROBLEMS:
I don't know if it was my problem, but I was constantly receiving a
"Cannot connect to Cups"

I noticed two things

1) Whenever I changed options in the Cups system, Cups daemon stopped.
So I had to reboot it '/etc/init.d/cupsys start'

you can do a 'nmap localhost | grep 631' to check if Cups is working

2) I set up Cups to use a user and a password. You could just setup it
to use 'root' and 'blabla' as a password, and then use those values in
the 'LInux Printer Configuration' program.

WITHOUT A PASSWORD, I WAS UNABLE TO ACCESS TO THE CUPS DAEMON WHEN
TRYING TO INSTALL A PRINTER

In KDE, you can add a password to CUPS like this:

'Control Center' -> 'Periperals' -> 'Printers'.

Then in the right of the CC, select 'Print Manager' -> 'Configure
Manager'

Now go to 'Cups Server' and beneath 'Account Information', select a
user and a password

Now, whenver you install a new printer you will now have the Samsung
ML-1740 model selected.

;)
