Removable drives fails to mount automatically

I am rather new to Ubuntu and does not know all the details yet.

However I managed to find out that I can mount a removable drive (mp3 
player, usb stick or whatever) with the command pmount.

This works fine, but I would like to the devices to mount automatically 
just as they did a few weeks ago on my newly installed system.

The same applies to cdrom drives, the can be mounted if I double-click 
on them in the "Computer", not audio-cd's though, which mean I can not 
play audio-cd's at all.

What have I done wrong, and how do I fix it?
