Paper size not correct

Hi again ubuntu-ers.

I've got paper problems over here for awhile, and I can't seem to figure
them out. Machine is a current Hoary box.

rduz at pippen:~ $ cat /etc/papersize
letter

I've also configured my printer (System -> Administration -> Printing,
right click on printer (HP Laserjet 4050 TN connected via LPR), select
Paper tab. I have it set to US Letter.

However, if I run (for example) the openoffice spreadsheet program,
select File, Printer Settings, select the printer, then press the
properties button, the paper size is set to A4.

I presume that the print dialog is some sort of 'common dialog', used by
many gnome applications. Where does it get the default paper size from?
How can I get it to default to US Letter, rather than A4?

Thanks.

Regards,
Rich
