Try connecting your camera to your wife's computer or some other.

gtkam is in ubuntu's universe repository. You didn't have to compile it,
just apt-get it.

Your camera is mass storage and you don't need any additional software
to use it. Just check your camera on other computer.

That's wrong. You shouldn't mount disks, only partitions. I don't know
why your camera has that strange set up.
