What command did you use? What was the output/error?

You don't use gparted or fdisk or anything like that. Each 
logical volume is like a partition and doesn't need to be
split up any further.

Were you able to create the logical volume? Ie. the lvcreate
was successful? What is the output of :

  sudo lvdisplay

What is the output of :

  ls -l /dev/mapper
