Sound in g4 kernel

Hi I just custom compiled a 2.6.12 upstream kernel and sound has ceased 
to work.  I am very surprised at this, since I just came off debian and 
sound with OSS worked.  I had ALSA working fine ine the 2.6.11 kernel 
and I have checked lsmod and everything and it's all loaded, I will 
check my config again, but any help, and maybe a patch that someone know 
about would be cool.  I dread having to go back to the ESD.
