This is a task that is relatively easy to do and the question has been
answered already in another post.

However, I just wanted to point out that what you are intending to make
is (by default) a firewall; but one that will also be usable as a
regular desktop computer.  This is not a good idea.  A firewall should
have no services running except for what is needed for it's prime role
of making the internal network secure from attacks.  Running anything
else gives an attacker more ways to break in.

There are many Linux distributions that are dedicated to making a stand
alone firewall.  Many boot from a floppy and don't require a hard disk.
~ They run quite well on obsolete hardware that is pretty much useless
for any other application.  Do a quick search on Google, Freshmeat and
SourceForge for floppy firewalls and you will get all kinds of hits.
