No, sir, I never doubted you -- I had indeed messed with the orginal
line Steve Laniels gave me and saw this result in apt-get.log.

Right.
So, when X wouldn't start it offered to tell me why and I said,
"Why not?"
"/etc/X11/X is not executable" was the response.
That, for now.
