enabling dma

Hello All,
Does anyone have any ideas about how to enable dma when hdparm doesn't
do the trick?
I've tried everything already mentioned on the list, and spent several
hours searching google, but I'm still scratching my head in my sleep. :)
* I've edited /etc/hdparm.conf, but running hdparm afterwards still
states that dma is switched off (the other disk settings I changed work
fine so I'm pretty sure I did this correctly).
* I've also added ide=dma to the kopt line of /boot/grub/menu.lst, and
made sure that the module 'piix' for Intel chipsets is listed in
/etc/modules, but neither makes any difference. My /etc/modules file
contains: psmouse, mousedev, ide-generic, ide-core, piix, ide-cd,
ide-disk, lp - in that order.
Is anyone else having similar problems? Does anyone have any
suggestions? :)
System Specs:
FIC VG31E motherboard with ATA/100 support
Intel ICH4 chipset
i386 Kernel 2.6.8.1-3
Maxtor ATA/133 HDD
...and I'm using new 80 pin ide cables.
Hope someone can help! Let me know if I should be more explicit.
Jon
PS: I'm a relative newbie.

Anyone have any idea what they mean, if they're important, and what can
be done about them?

Hi,
I have to install Linux server for internet connection.
They use in the shool a Pentanet PCI card.
I found in Debian Sarge and Ubuntu this packages
pentanet-utils
pentanet-dev
pentanet-doc
and the source package.
But i have to install the driver that is in source before because the
device is not open.
With lspci I have Pentamedia Co Ltd : Unknown device 9050 (rev 02)
I install build-essential and the headers of the kernel
I try to compile but there are errors and i don't know if it is problem
with the kernel.
I tried with Ubuntu Warty kernel 2.6.8-1 and Debian Sarge kernel
2.4.27-1
All the document i found, it is for Red Hat with kernel 2.4.x .
Have someone who install a pentanet card with Linux Debian based ?
Thanks,
Michel

I had that one as well. Take a look at
http://ubuntuguide.org/ the solution is there and it
works fine.

They sell proprietary software for an open operating system. That's
like serving ham and cheese sandwitches at a synagogue. Or anti-war

It is still not right to steal things. This question makes us look
bad.
You wanna have some real fun? Download the Debain 2.4 kernel-image and
kernel headers package. Install them and reboot (cd to the directory
and sudo dpkg -i kernel-*).
If your system seems to be running fine (It probably will) read the
beta driver's documentation and try to install it. If it works, come
back and tell us about it. That would be more productive.

The gnome screen magnifier is really designed for a two monitor setup.
I prefer to use the virtual screen size option that is built right into
X windows. You set the actual screen to 640 by 480, but the virtual
screen to something like 1024 by 768. Unfortunately, most tools to help
you set up the graphical environment don't have options to set the
virtual screen size. I end up doing by hand, and if you are new to
Linux, that can be a little scary.

OK. I hope I'm not tiring you guys out with all my questions. And I
rly appreciate all the help. Anyway....:
I had been looking thru my repositories in the "Settings >
Repositories" menu of Synaptic. I had accidentally deleted the
repository that was on the install CD.
Now, heres my prob:
When I go to "Edit > Add CD-ROM... > OK" It gives me a message saying
"Unable to stat the mount point /cdrom/ - stat (2 No such file or
directory)". I assume this is because I don't have my 2 CD drives
mounting in "/cdrom/". Instead, I had modified "/etc/fstab" so that my
DVD player and CD burner mounted in "/mnt/hdc/" and "/mnt/hdd/"
respectively. I chose these names because I wanted all of my mounts
(besides my "/" mount) to go at "/mnt/" in a folder that was the same
as their device id. For example, my DVD player is "/dev/hdc/" and my
CD burner is "/dev/hdd/".
Is there any way to get Synaptic to recognize these mount points so I
can add a repository from the CD? I don't want to have to try to move
it all back to "/cdrom/" (and I don't remember the exact directory
structure of "/cdrom/").
~Matt

Something weird seems to be happening to this e-mail.
First my ISP cuts out, then Yahoo tells me I have been
on too long. Anyway, the e-mail seems to have never
reached the server and so I will try one more time. I
don't see my Visor HotSync cradle in either Gnome
device manager or by doing lspci -v. However, ls -l
returns:
/dev/ttyUSB*
crw-rw---- 1 root dialout 188, 0 2005-01-27
19:00 /dev/ttyUSB0
dmesg returns:
usb usb4: string descriptor 0 read error: -19
I am wondering if this is my Visor HotSync cradle. I
tried to find out why I get this message before on the
list, but didn't get a reply. Anyone have any ideas?
Cheers,
Brian

Yes, I neglected to mention dmix (I do know about it, since I'm in the
middle of writing a Python generator for .asoundrcs, and there are a
fair number of shortcomings in the implementation regarding mmap and shm
implementation :-).

Specific to his example, if he didn't wish to change the sink using
`gstreamer-properties' (or Desktop>Preferences>Multimedia Systems
Selectors in Hoary), changing XMMS to use esd is the most straight-
forward choice.
Yes, dmix is the preferred mechanism, but the preferred mechanism isn't
always the "best" solution. (Consider for a moment why esd was enabled
by default in Ubuntu, for instance.)

This is a helpful hint for him, but the preferred [correct] place to set
such variables is in /etc/sysctl.conf:
dev/rtc/max-user-freq=1024
Then `sudo sysctl -p'.
