ATI Radeon fglrx driver (hoary)

I recently installed a Radeon 9200SE video card and initially set it up
using the "ati" driver in xserver-xorg. The performance seemed quite
good, but I figured that I could get some improvement using the fglrx
binary driver.
I then install the xorg-driver-fglrx package (per the instructions on
the wiki--substituting xorg for xfree86 where appropriate) but when gdm
starts, the screen blanks and nothing happens.
The logfile has some interesting information:
(II) Loading extension XFree86-DRI
(II) Loading extension XFree86-VidModeExtension
(II) Loading extension XFree86-Misc
(II) Loading extension XFree86-DGA
(II) fglrx(0): driver needs XFree86 version: 4.3.x
(WW) fglrx(0): could not detect XFree86 version (query_status=-3)
Could it be that fglrx is not compatible with xorg?
I tried running X using the fglrx driver without the fglrx kernel module
and I did get a display, however there was no acceleration and the
performance was quite poor compared to the ati or radion driver.
Any suggestions?
Bob
