Are you tracking Debian's unstable archive in you
/etc/apt/sources.list and recently performed an upgrade/dist-upgrade?
A friend of mine is running MEPIS and did this yesterday which blew
out his hotplug. (He fixed the problem by reinstalling his OS, not
the most elegant solution but it got his machine back up and working.)
I think the issue may be fixed in a day or two when the bug is
resolved in the unstable tree. Until then you might have to load some
modules manually by putting them in /etc/modules to be loaded at
bootup (i.e. modules for your mouse and network card). Then try an
upgrade/dist-upgrade again in a day or two and hope that the error is
resolved.
(Of course you could always get the source code and fix the problem
yourself and send the patch into the package maintainer - that would
put hair on your chest!).
