GNOME trouble

similar trouble abound on this side.  it doesn't restart unless
activated by a superuser.

when i killall, i get this error: "Panel already running detected.."

i was planning a reinstall anyway.. but this is weird.  it happened
when i switched to a USB mouse.  another poster mentioned the error
occuring after the use of a usb jump drive.  could that be a clue ?
