Okay, it worked with the new config file you sent me.
Like you said, the desktop was completely frozen whilsy it was
compiling. But I will never know the result of it, because after 20
minutes, I lost Gnome's top and bottom panels. and another 20 minutes
later, X (or at least GDM) restarted and all of a sudden, I was taken to
GDM's log-in screen !! :o(
Noooo, this is teh first crash since I put my old PCI MAtrox video card,
24 hours ago ! :o(

I had Evolution running as well, along with XawTV and Galeon, but why
would that cause X or GDM to restart 'just like that' ?! 

So, looks like AGP or PCI, ATI or NVidia, 3D or old Matrox, X and/or GDM
can still restart at random... :o(

So I may as well use the on-board NVidia chip, at least, it will let me
play 3D games between crashes ! ;-/
