Okay, I have left the X conf file as is, I modified only the "Device"
section, replaced "nv" with "mga", and put the correct PCI address of
the card, using 'lspci'. Seems to work. Do I need to put 'mga'
in /etc/modules, in the same way that there is 'nvidia' in there at the
moment ?
I was right (sadly). The BIOS of the motherboard would not disable the
on-board Nvidia chip. So I have both cards running at the same time, but
obviously, XFree is only using the Matrox card.
However, maybe I should unload all the nvidia related stuff, since what
I am trying to figure out is if my stability problems are related to
that...
Okay, let's keep the Matrox card for a day or two, see if that makes
Ubuntu any less unstable.
Would be great if I could select a 1152*864 resolution though, because
the Matrox card won't go above 1024*764 ! :-/ Well it will, maybe I need
to lower the colour depth from 24 down to 16 ?? Will try that...
