starting desktop

Yes,I got the desktop.
Wherever the mouse pointer is the background fragments.As you move it 
the fragmentation spreads with it.
The computer is a Compaq deskpro that a mate of mine gave to my 
daughters.I connected it to my broadband and it worked ok with pictures 
and general use but not with games.My daughters were forever letting 
spyware and viruses through the firewall,so I thought I'd try linux on 
this machine first.
Also,if you scroll down apage the original clear printing 
disintergrates.I assume the graphics aren't up to it,but it worked ok 
with 98SE.
I do not know what hardware is in it and have no chance of finding out 
until I can use it.
