starting desktop

I reloaded ubuntu and everything went OK.As I move the mouse a trail 
follows it.Also when I scroll down the writing becomes unreadable.This 
Compaq never had good graphics for game playing but always worked well 
with desktop graphics on 98SE.
Any ideas for a fix?I loaded ubuntu on the older computer first before 
putting it on my newer one to see how it worked.
