Backup and entire dir using tar?

Not nearly as funny as you might think, outside of the 
small-sample-for-maling-list  world.
One application: don't pipe into less but save to a file
and diff that with a previous log - this is how i generate
error/change mails in my cron scripts. Comes really handy
when you want to see what changed since the last time
your backup did run ...
