The boxes and hardware may look identical, but maybe they differ
slightly.
Some products with the same type-number can have different hardware,
this happens a lot with NICs.

The main difference between your Ubuntu and Mandrake will be the
kernel, (I think MDK runs 2.4, while the livecd uses 2.6).  MDK kernels
are somewhat patched while Ubuntu should use vanilla.

If you have the chance, try a 2.6 kernel on the MDK setup.
