Relative Newbie With Display Problem (Problem 1).

Hi,

I am new to Ubuntu, to this list and a relatively new
Linux user as well. I have played around with Fedora
Core 3, Libranet, Knoppix, Suse, etc, but I am now
working without a safety net as I have erased my
Windows partition (doh) and am trying to go cold
turkey. Firstly, I would like to say CUDOs to the
Ubuntu team on a great initiative. That said, here is
my first problem: The display does not seem to be
working properly. the right hand side of the desktop
and all windows is cut off. I can barely see the
trashcan icon in either 800 x 600 resolution or 1024 x
768. Refresh rates are limited 60 Hz in 1024 x 768 and
to 72 Hz, 60 Hz and 56 Hz in 800 x 600. I don't think
my display/monitor and graphics card were detected
properly. Here are the specs: ASUS V8200 series card
that should register as a GeForce 3 and a ViewSonic
E70 monitor, with Ubuntu 4.10. It would be nice to see
a display config tool that would allow you to change
monitor (like the CUPS printer driver scheme) rather
than just resolution. This seems to be one of the
weakest links in the configuration process for newbies
in Linux and no distro that I have seen seems to do a
very good job of detecting the display hardware. Even
Knoppix gets my monitor wrong and it isn't an uncommon
display and Knoppix is known for its great hardware
detection. Any advise or comments would be much
appreciated.

Cheers,

Brian
