686 optimized kernel on a via epia MII

should i be able to use the 686 optimized kernel on a via epie MII6000?

i installed linux-image-2.6.8.1-4-686, but when it tries to boot it get caught in a cycle of rebooting. luckily grub still has my old kernel which boots fine.
