Writing to USB key

I reformat my USB-keys - fdisk - often to ext2.

That said, some keys come with a FAT filesystem on /dev/sda1, where
others come with FAT on /dev/sda.

Check yours.

If 'fdisk -l /dev/sda' has garbage, then sda itself is the filesystem.
