Have you compiled the snd-azx driver from hoary/universe's 'alsa-source'
package?

1) sudo aptitude install alsa-source build-essential kernel-package \
   linux-headers-$(uname -r)
2) Read the directions in /usr/share/doc/alsa-source/README.Debian.

*Note the backslash in step 1) only denotes that you should type the
entire command on one line without the backslash or the line break.
