Hello Chuck and m4ng0
Thank you both for your suggestions.

The error message I get is simply "No devices found".
If I unplug the scanner and then replug it, it works; as it does if I
switch it on after I have booted.
Using lsusb I have the lines:
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 04b8:010b Seiko Epson Corp. Perfection 1240
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
/usr/bin/xsane has me as the owner and scanner as the group.
/.dev/usb/scanner0 is the same.
I have altered those as I seem to remember that is what I had to do
before when I had this problem. But I could be wrong!
I am going to work through all your suggestions, and will give another
shout if I can't sort it.
Many thanks
Keith
