Scanner problem

Hello from a newcomer to the list.

I have recently downloaded Ubuntu and from first impressions it is an 
excellent distro. Congratulations!

However, I have one problem with it.

The installation did not find my Epson 1240U USB scanner. With one 
exception of about two years ago, it has been found and installed before 
with other distros.

I have edited the  /etc/sane.d/epson.conf  file and the scanner works as 
root but not as a user. I had this problem once before and had to edit 
the permissions of another file - but I can't remember which file it was.

Please could someone tell me which file it is?
