I experienced this before having a brandnew pc with nvidia chipset and
an dvd-rom drive.
different dvd-rom drives had the same issue.
finally I've taken an old cd-burner and it worked.
this machine has also troubles accessing the dvd-rom
while running windows, only solution was to disable all
nvidia chipset drivers in windows.
also knoppix 3.4 was recognizing the dvd, later knoppix
not. I haven't researched what the difference between
these versions was. I expect its the nvidia modules in
the kernel.
maybe newer kernels are broken in booting from nvidia
chipsets in combionation with (certain?) dvd drives.
maybe thats your problem also.
