nvidia problems

I can't seem to get my X.org to use the nVidia proprietary module. I
have made sure that the driver mentioned in /etc/X11/xorg.conf is
"nvidia" instead of "nv". Still I see the following in
/etc/var/Xorg.0.log:

 (II) LoadModule: "nv"
 (II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/nv_drv.o

and the GLX extension fails:

 (EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (NVIDIA X driver not found)

'lsmod' shows that the nvidia kernel module has been loaded properly.
What's missing/wrong?

$ lspci | grep nVidia
0000:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV6 [Vanta/Vanta LT] (rev 15)

/M

Software is not manufactured, it is something you write and publish.
Keep Europe free from software patents, we do not want censorship
by patent law on written works.

Never be afraid to try something new. Remember, amateurs built the
ark; professionals built the Titanic.
