auto shut down fails

Good Tim, I was just thinking the hackers would ask me that :)
I installed Warty on my desktop PC from a downloaded installation CD. My
desktop's hard disk used to have only one partition, but I made 3 more:
one for linux
one for swap
one for fat32 to reduce the size of the original NTFS partition.
I had always used the option Shutdown & Restart;
recently I instructed Synaptic to do a Smart install and it installed
Kernel image 2.6.8.1-4-386, which GRUB now shows at boot-up in addition
to the original 2.6.8.1-3-386.
Now that I've wanted to shutdown & Power off, I find this problem with
Linux that it won't do anything else after "Power down"
