Ubuntu stopped connecting to Internet

Hi,

Sorry everyone, I apparently accidentally posted the message quoted
below only to Martin Schmitz and didn't notice that until now. Martin
also already replied to this message, but I thought to send it to the
list anyway (to show everybody that I haven't been lazy, but been acting
like a one man emergency team :-)

Sorry about top-posting too. I did this because the listings at the end
of the message are so long.

... time warp ...

New turn in this case - my Internet connection just started to work -
after eleven hours of downtime (and let me remaind you, it's not the ISP
- the connection worked all the time in Windows (and I came back to
Ubuntu many times per hour to check if the connection was there)). I
don't know why now, because since my last attempt to connect I didn't do
anything else but read the man page of dhclient.

For your information, I list other things I tried earlier but which
didn't work. My e-mail service was down for some time (just a coinsident
- has nothing to do with this problem) and I couldn't report these
things before - sorry:

Azz, you adviced me to try to ping address 216.239.39.99. I tried, but
no packages went through, or something like that.

Wallijonn, you asked if I power cycled the DSL modem. Yes I did, every
now and then, but this didn't help. You asked too about what was
in /var/log. If you meant a file /var/log, I couldn't find it, but
propably you meant some log file in the directory /var/log. There were
so many of them that I gave up for the time being - I couldn't tell
which one of them might be usefull (and could not send mail to ask :(

And Ben, yes, the first thing I did was to phone my ISP and ask if there
was a problem with the connection, but they said that the connection is
on :-)

As I said earlier, I also studied the man page of dhclient, but I should
know more of things to be able to use that information.

Thank's everyone for your replies, we'll see if the connection stays on.
If not, It's nice to know that I will not be left alone with the
problem :-)
