mc inside gnome-terminal without accented characters!?

I don't know if this helps, but you could try to change mc settings.
Pressing F9 opens menus.
There choose

Options -> Display bits

I have there marked

ISO 8859-1

and

Full 8-bit input
(this is my own translation from finnish, it's the lowest option)

This let's me use ä,ö,å in mc.
