changing resolution without screen

What a predicament!

I just installed Warty after spending the day resizing an XP partition and
updated Warty from ubuntu.security.

The last question the installer package makes in text mode is to choose what
screen resolutions I should allow the system to use. Wanting to see how it
looked, though I knew I wouldn't use it, I marked the highest (it was
something like 1600x1400) besides the traditional ones of 1024x780 and
800x600.

I now see that that first resolution was too high for the monitor, because
now a box comes up saying the operating frequency ranges are
HF 30-71kHz
VF 50-160Hz

Can somebody help me with the keyboard sequence to set the resolution to
1024x780 ?

I still have the computer on as, being new to Linux, I don't know if I can
safely reset it and enter Ubuntu Rescue.
