Broken panel in hoary

That doesn't seem to be it. I'm getting an error when the panel starts:
'The Application "hardware-monitor" has quit unexpectedly.' Other
applets seem to load or not randomly on panel startup. The drive
mounter, stock ticker, and weather all seem to load sometimes, and work
when they do. Hardware-monitor crashes, and the clock, and notification
area seem to be shy.

Is there a "clean" way to remove applets from the config in gconf when
the applets aren't running and the panel isn't responding?
