<sigh> I wanted to avoid this thread, but what the heck...

I think it makes sense to reply to the list. Since this is largly a 
technical list, responding to the list can make life easier for many 
people who would like to search the archives for solutions. It can also 
promote discussion which might be in the best interest of Ubuntu.

However, it's the mail admin's decision, and whatever the policies of 
the Ubuntu developers or mailing list admin's are, we should respect 
that. I find it inconvenient to change the "to:" field everytime, but 
it's a minor inconvenience.
