Yes I did this. I'm not sure I understand your response.
Are you saying that I can safely delete the older (3.3) versions
of gcc/g++?
I thought maybe the "system" would still require I have gcc/g++ 3.3
installed even though I personally will never use them again (since
I have switched to 3.4). So is it safe to remove those packages?
I understand that I'll have to recompile any userland C++ libraries
I use.

Yes, this is what I am doing but I find it a bit of a PITA :)
