Why are Mono apps fragile?

Mono is still very much a work in progress. As it stands today while
development on .NET 2.0 has already begun, not all of 1.0 is yet complete.
The effort to make a .NET framework that works not only on Linux, but also
on Windows and MacOSX is no small task and many people will point out that
the Mono version of .NET has many features Microsoft's implementation lacks.

That said, Mono is an awesome choice for development on any platform...
However it's also still a bit early, particularly for GUI development.
You're welcome to get on the message boards for these other applications
like Muine, Tomboy, F-Spot, etc. and you have a decent chance of getting
some help.
