Recommended way to deal with locally-compiled apps

Two places are available for locally installed software: /usr/local and
/opt.  /usr/local is the traditional "swamp" where all such packages are
mixed together, while /opt is intended to have one subdirectory for each
software package installed there (making it easier to maintain).
