Cant print pdf

Got my laptop finally installed with Ubuntu, oh what fun! My kingdom
for a laptop with a bootable cdrom =)

All seems great but cant print pdf files to my HP 5850. It prints
everything else I have chucked at it but pdfs & ps files just end up
printing 3 lines then spewing blankpages.

The lines on the 1st page look like a ps header i think.....

Tried xpdf, ggv, gpdf, acroread.... All the same prety much.

Any ideas?
