Thanks for the suggestion and info.

I did use automount back when Fedora was my main desktop, and that was 
with a removeable drive, so, you're right, it might be an option for 
what I want. Your post will help me remember how to set it up ;)

One thing that the gnome-volume-manager allows is for an auto-run 
program when the drive is mounted. What I'm aiming at is to use this 
facility to start a daemon (it's one that depends on the contents of the 
drive to start successfully, which is why I need to do it this way). Can 
you or anyone think of how I might do something similar using automount?
