Hi,

My brother asked me to help him install a linux desktop on his laptop,
after he had problems getting the Xwindows setup correct under a
previous
debian install. So I decided to install ubuntu, which i've been using on
my Dell Inspiron 8100 with great success (thanks).

Unfortunately the install fails while performing the step "Install the
base system" I get the following error:

Base system installation error
The debootstrap program exited with an error (return value 2)
Check /var/log/messages or see virtual console 3 for the details

Console 3 has a lot of insmod lines ending with

insmod /lib/modules/2.6.8.1-3-386/kernel/drivers/net/3c59x.ko
	No matching physical volume found
	No volume groups found
Reading all physical volumes. This may take a while...
	No matching physical volume found

Reading all physical volumes. This may take a while...
eval: 3: Syntax error: newline unexpected (expecting ")")

I've experiemented with adding the following boot parameters, to no
avail:
linux nolapic noapic aic7xxx=no_probe

Any ideas???

thanks in advance
