well, for 2 main reasons.
1st when i install it with apt the version was older then xfce site and
in beta stage. some stuff didn't work for me. I've got an inicial
message saying I've got already a system tray open (at the start of
session) and will close the new one. Then it leaves me with *NONE*. I
can live without one, but i had always to close that message box. And
mime have problems too. No matter wich file I click, i've got a "mime
application did'nt exist" or something... instead of the correct
application openned with the file. The version of os-cillation was
newer (they release at same day then xfce official site, and now is at
RC3) and that problems disapear :D
2nd, since it was compiled on my machine it was supposed to be more
tweeked for my processor (I use the flag for P4 to gcc). Compilation is
quick and almost automatic, i've only use apt to solve one dependencie
missing. I don't find time yet to try it with my older machine, a PII
200MHz and 98M of ram (i want to optimized at maximum for that slow
beast).
I don't pretend to imply it was the best method... just a possible way
and an alternative when the other had problems or you want to try the
latest version.
My 2 cents was not about the way of installing XFCE, but the fact that
is very simple to mix xfce (or even a lighter WM) with parts of gnome
(and/or gdesklets) to easy transition/use to another Wm or too
striped/skinny ones.
Btw, another good thing in xfce are the applets, very light and with
the same features that of (heavy) gnomes equivalents.
I'm just amazed by Linux flexibility! Not to mention diversity =D>
(sorry my english)
-Edit:- Oh, and if you compile with the GUI, it offers options for
Extensive Optimization and for transparent Compositing Manager (if you
have xorg instead of xfree).
