XFCE is very nice.
It gives a full (configurable) System menu anywhere you clic the mouse
(don't need to search for an icon on a panel), and if you setup
Nautilus to *not* draw the desktop you can use it as a file manager
without start gnome desktop... it's confortable and fast (fwwm is
faster and light, but a little annoying...) The only thing I have done
is to link any /usr/share/icons to my /home/rui/.icons in order to have
all gnome icons :D

I compile XFCE4.2-RC3 (the latest) from:
http://www.os-cillation.com/article.php?sid=42
they have a GUI for the compiler/installer, a very good and efficient
one!
They have a terminal (called Terminal) fast, small and better then
gnome-terminal or any other terminal i used.

I use too, gnome-panel and starterbar from gdesklets. That make XFCE
more confortable than Gnome iself (or any other one)... btw gdesklets
works with Ice, blackbox and Windowmaker (this one not exactly
perfect). They are useful to extend light WM to more eye-candy or
user-frendly at resources expenses 8-[
