Kernel 2.6.10 Not Booting Properly

It may be something to do with the kernel, but I also would check to 
see if when you

ps aux

that there is in-fact a X process running.  And that you have 
re-installed your video card drivers, if you use non-free ones like 
nvidia's.  I would try killing the X and then running X from the 
command line to see the output.
