evolution launches with no GUI

I tried evolution 1.x for a while, and problems like you describe used 
to happen all of the time.  The advice from the ximian developers was to 
run a bundled script called killev which killed all of the related 
evolution processes (there are far too many for my design tastes).  
However killev is either not part of evolution 2.x or it just isn't part 
of the Ubuntu port.
