ubuntu woes

My friend is still trying to run ubuntu. Once installed it can lock up
within 15 minutes or run fine for several hours. Using a live CD he doesn't
have any problems. He runs XP on this machine with no problems at all so I'm
thinking it isn't memory or a hard disk problem... How can we troubleshoot
this down to the offending module?
