Last Synaptic upgrade

Hello Ubuntu,

  Ok, an array 4 install CD and today a update/upgrade on synaptic has
  given me a strange system:
  - Desktop icon on lower left corner is missing.
  - Trash Can icon on lower right corner is missing.
  - I have a sheet of paper has my mounted SMB partitions.
  - Snaptic tray icon gone!

  It was a painfull upgrade of 200+ packages and about 180Megs....
  Has the hoary specs changed so much?
  I've  tried  a  dist-upgrade  and  it does nothing, says 0/0/0... to
  get/update/instal etc....
