Ndiswrapper messed up?

Hi list,
I have an hp pavilion 6730 running hoary. I installed a D-Link
DWL-G510 and found that it was supported(?) by ndiswrapper. so I
followed the instructions on both the ubuntu site and the installation
guide from http://ndiswrapper.sf.net/ but things still aren't working
right. 'modprobe ndiswrapper' works fine, and the computer behaves
until i do either 'ifup wlan0' or activate the wireless interface from
system>administration>networking. The interface cannot seem to find a
dhcp lease, even a foot away from the AP. That's not the worst part:
after trying to activate the interface, the keyboard does a weird
auto-repeat thing, so if i try to type "ifconfig" at a command line,
it comes out ifcooooooooooooooooooonfig or something like that. this
is true of any command, within X or not, and even typing in forms or
the address bar in firefox, so it seems like a kernel-level problem.
can anyone offer some guidance here? I feel like I am losing my mind
trying to get this computer to work with ubuntu, and this seems to be
my last real challenge. any suggestions on something I've overlooked
are appreciated, however at this stage I'm convinced there's either
something wrong with ndiswrapper or with the kernel I'm running, which
is stock ubuntu 2.6.10-4-686. if it makes any difference, I tried
using the drivers both from the CD i got with the card, and the ones
recommended by the ndiswrapper card list, offered by asus, even though
they appear to be the same drivers.
Thanks in advance,
Sam
